Pumphouse to State Bridge is by far the most popular stretch on the Upper C. Some break down the stretch into two sections calling the stretch from Pumphouse to Rancho Del Rio/Yarmony Bridge the “Pumphouse Run” and the stretch from there to State Bridge the “State Bridge Run”. If one is looking for continues whitewater this may not be the trip for you but in the two gorges, Upper Gorge and Red Gorge, some really fun rapids are found. In between the gorges and after Red Gorge the gradient doesn’t drop very much making for a really slow float but the view makes up for the lack of excitement and while I don’t fish, I hear the fishing is really good.

The State Bridge Run doesn’t have any big rapids but the gradient drops more often through here making the run a little faster with some fun class II wave trains. This is a good stretch to take beginner kayakers down at most flows. It has a lot of opportunities to work on eddy turns, ferries, and other skills.
